You know... back in the good old days when people weren't afraid to stand up and speak their minds?
I'm sure all you kiddies have seen the pictures on History Channel. Those black and white films of young women, their fists clenched in anger, burning their bras? You know they weren't just pissed about uncomfortable underwires, the bras were a symbol of repression. Do you know why these gals were so angry?
Back in the days of June Cleaver and Harriet Nelson, women had very little to say about things. Things like how they had babies to start with. Those were the days of "Twilight Sleep" You were drugged into oblivion and so was the baby. But that was ok. Women should be spared these things. You got pregnant, you had the baby. It didn't matter if you were raped, or if you died having the baby. It was a woman's lot in life.
Now, I'm not saying that abortion is birth control. And I'm not saying that abortion is the best thing that was invented. I'm saying that back in the good old days, if you were raped or going to die during birth there was no such thing as choice, unless you wanted to go the route of a coathanger.
Another reason women were pissed off was discrimination. Oh wow. Remember THAT word? And you only thought that happened to people of color! No, my darlings. If you were a woman, there were certain jobs you couldn't do and certain places you couldn't go. Women did GIRL jobs... like secretary, or nurse, or maid. Oh there were women doctors and all, but they were regarded with mistrust. Afterall, why would a woman want to be a doctor when she could just stay home and have babies? And if you DID work, a woman was paid less than a man. (I hate to tell you, but THAT still HAPPENS)
Have you ever read "The Women's Manifesto"? Check it out...
I borrowed it from The NOW Website
I can hear some people screaming "A FEMINIST!!!!" Yes! You bet your ass! And you should be one too. Why? Because (if you are a US citizen) the attitude of the President and the majority of congress is one that will set Women's Rights back to the stone age.
I want you to think about what it would mean to you if you couldn't get the education or the job you wanted. What if you didn't have a choice? Well, sister, these days are coming once more if you just sit on your pretty little ass.
